Allan Walkey, MD, has been selected to lead the launch of the Lahey Institute for Healthcare Delivery Science at the UMass Chan-Lahey Regional Campus Medical School at Lahey Clinic. Walkey currently serves as professor of medicine and chief of the Division of Health Systems Science in the Department of Medicine at UMass Chan Medical School in Worcester.
The Institute, which officially launched in July, is dedicated to advancing research and innovation in healthcare delivery across the full continuum of care. It builds on a team science and learning health system approach, and on the partnership between Lahey Clinic and UMass Chan that led to the opening of the UMass Chan-Lahey regional campus in 2024.
Walkey said he is honored to lead the Institute as it pursues research aimed at improving health outcomes, care delivery, and population health, and looks forward to integrating research with education and clinical practice across Lahey and UMass Chan-Lahey.
Walkey joined UMass Chan in 2023 after more than 20 years at Boston University School of Medicine, where he served as founding co-director of the Evans Center for Implementation and Improvement Sciences and professor of medicine. He has served on multiple National Institutes of Health Special Emphasis Panels and grant advisory boards, and recently received the Mid-Career Achievement Award from the American Thoracic Society's Critical Care Assembly. Walkey holds a bachelor's degree in psychology from Tufts University, a Doctor of Medicine from UMass Chan, and a master's in epidemiology from Boston University School of Public Health.
Susan Moffatt-Bruce, MD, PhD, president of Lahey Clinic, said the new Institute reinforces Lahey's commitment as an academic medical center focused on shaping the future of healthcare, and welcomed Walkey's experience as the organization builds on its clinical foundation to spur innovation.
Walkey will continue as chief of the Division of Health Systems Science at UMass Chan Medical School while serving as interim director of the new Institute. Terence R. Flotte, MD, dean of the T.H. Chan School of Medicine at UMass Chan, said Walkey's leadership will strengthen ties between UMass Chan-Lahey and the main campus in Worcester.
