Alessandro Cancelliere MD, PhD

 

Alessandro (Alex) Cancelliere, MD, PhD is an emergency physician, neuroscientist, educator, and Stroke Director at Beth Israel Lahey Health Medical Center – Peabody. Board certified in Emergency Medicine, he serves as an Attending Emergency Physician at Beth Israel Lahey Medical Center and is an Associate Professor of Emergency Medicine at UMASS Chan School of Medicine.

 

Originally from Matera, Italy, Dr. Cancelliere's journey into medicine began long before medical school. He started his career as a paramedic, where he developed a deep appreciation for the critical role of emergency care. That experience inspired him to pursue both a PhD in Neuroscience and a Doctor of Medicine at the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine, followed by residency training through the Harvard Affiliated Emergency Medicine Residency at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center.

 

Throughout his career, Dr. Cancelliere has combined clinical medicine with research and education. His academic work has focused on traumatic brain injury, neurocritical care, pediatric neuroimaging, and acute stroke, resulting in numerous peer-reviewed publications and book chapters. As Stroke Director, he has led efforts to improve stroke recognition, streamline emergency treatment, and strengthen partnerships with EMS providers throughout the region. He is a frequent speaker on stroke care, emergency medicine, and critical care, and is passionate about mentoring the next generation of physicians and first responders.

 

Outside of the hospital, Dr. Cancelliere enjoys spending time with his wife and children, exploring new cultures through international travel, and pursuing his lifelong love of music. A fan of hard rock, he enjoys both listening to and writing original music.
