Shiyoung Roh, MD received her undergraduate degree in chemistry from Wesleyan
University and medical degree from Tufts University School of Medicine. After
completing her internship at Mount Auburn Hospital, she returned to Tufts/New England
Medical Center for her ophthalmology residency training, followed by a glaucoma
fellowship at Lahey Clinic, where she joined as staff surgeon.

Currently serving as Chair of Ophthalmology, she holds academic appointments as
Professor of the Department of Surgery at UMass Chan-Lahey, UMass Chan Medical
School and Adjunct Professor of Ophthalmology at Tufts University School of Medicine
and is active in teaching and training of ophthalmology residents, medical students and
glaucoma fellows.

Prior to medical school, Dr. Roh worked in healthcare management consulting in New
York City, followed by research at the Channing Laboratory in Boston. Her work in
research led to peer-reviewed publications in the areas of chemistry, cataracts and
glaucoma. Having authored several book chapters, Dr. Roh has lectured in these areas
of interest both nationally and internationally.

As a cataract and glaucoma surgeon, Dr. Roh spearheaded Lahey’s growth in
ophthalmic surgeries, working on OR efficiencies and clinical expansion, organizing
workflows to improve access to care to accommodate high patient volumes.  Her
leadership roles at Lahey include past Vice Chair of Surgery and current Chair of the
OR Clinical Practice and Policy Committee and extended regionally, serving on the New
England Ophthalmological Society Board from 2000-2014 and as President of the New
England Ophthalmological Society from 2012-2013.

The scope of Dr. Roh’s work include tele-ophthalmology and population-based
screening programs for glaucoma and diabetes, and quality improvement projects that
have aligned cost of care with improved patient care through OR efficiencies,
standardization of preoperative and postoperative regimens, and optimization of
ophthalmology workflow in the clinics.
